Next step in stopping a Content Farm from stealing content, contacting web hoster

TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 2011 AT 1:56PM

I posted about BestGreenWebHostingDeal stealing my content.   I have tried to contact the owner of the site, but no response.

Next step I contacted the web hosting company and they asked for the following information.  As part of what they ask for below I plan on using this post as example of how BestGreenWebHostingDeal copies my content as it will be only a matter of minutes before their content bot scrapes my site and posts this up.  And here is the copy of my site http://www.bestgreenwebhostingdeal.com/2070/next-step-in-stopping-a-content-farm-from-stealing-content-contacting-web-hoster/

Feb 2011, who visits GreenM3

It has been a month since I switched to Squarespace and a good time to check Google Analytics for some data.

The Top 10 Service Providers are ISPs as expected.

What gets more interesting is the companies who are listed as Service Providers.  Note: it can be difficult sometimes to separate a Telecom company visiting vs. an ISP so I am not including Telecoms in the following list of companies.  Here is a sample from a scan of who is reading GreenM3 from their work locations.

  • Microsoft
  • RIM
  • Cisco
  • HP
  • Emerson
  • Dell
  • APC
  • Intel
  • Extreme Networks

Who is BestGreenWebHostingDeal (content farm) that is using GreenM3 content?

Curious who the content farm is that steals GreenM3 content I decided to look up who owns the BestGreenWebHostingDeal.

Checking with Network Solutions I wanted to see who owns the BestGreenHosting url. http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/bestgreenwebhostingdeal.com

Example of Content Farm, stealing content from GreenM3

Google has updated search to find Content Farm, but nothing is perfect.

The Farming of Content

What constitutes a content farm is open to debate.

A general consensus is that the label applies to websites that lift content almost entirely from other sites. However, that's also true of sites that churn out patterns of words that satisfy Google's algorithms, using search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.

Here is an example of a post I wrote yesterday that is copied by another site.

Get your Greenpeace #unfriendcoal organic t-shirt

FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 2011 AT 12:23PM

Greenpeace has a site specific for unfriendcoal http://www.facebook.com/unfriendcoal.

When you Google Search for “greenpeace unfriendcoal t-shirt” a content farm comes up #7

Whereas my original content comes up lower.

Test of SEO for GreenM3 on a search for "dell c6145"

Dell announced the Dell C6145 server on Feb 14 and I didn't get around to posting until Feb 15.  The normal rule is the first to post has a higher chance of a high ranking in Google Search.  I was getting some hits on my post yesterday and decided to do a Google search for "dell c6145".

image

Making sure I was not logged in the Google Search page.  (When you are logged in the search results will be personalized.)  Here are the search results.  My post is #5 after 4 Dell sites.

image

The next 5 are as follows.

image

My theory of why my post gets higher results than others is I try to pull together a variety of sources, not just one, at least two, and in this case four.  Two are videos, two are sites with original content.

Most in the media wouldn't point to four links driving content off their site.  But, as I joke I have media status, but that doesn't mean I behave like media. Smile

Oh yeh, and the number of people who read this blog supply the traffic.  Thanks for reading the Green Data Center blog.
