“green data center” search on google.cn vs google.com

Curious on how google.cn (google’s china version of search) works vs. google.com I tried “green data center”

On Google.com GreenM3 is #1.  On Google.cn GreenM3 is #6, but I still snuck in a #1 spot as the #1 entry is my old TechNet article on Green Datacenters.

Actually, now that  I look at the Google.com results, I have spot #1 and #2.  Pretty cool.

Here is google.com results.

Impact of Google’s withdraw from China on GreenM3, China is #30 in traffic

There is tons of news out there on Google’s contemplating a withdraw from China.  There are over 2,500 news articles on the topic.  WSJ.com is just one example.

Google's Watershed Moment in China

By ANDREW PEAPLE

There's little doubt this is a watershed moment for Google. By publicly contemplating a withdrawal from China, the company is showing it values its reputation for providing a secure service to users more than a leading position in a massive and growing market.

But is pulling out the right decision?

Near-term, Google's internal agonizing will be soothed by the knowledge China remains a small part of its global business. Google's China operations will contribute just 1% of its 2010 profits, Citi Investment Research says.

Telegraph UK has a timeline article on the activity in China.  Look at the activities over the past year.

March 2009:

China blocks YouTube, which is owned by Google.

June 2009:

China blocks Google.com and Gmail briefly as it accuses Google of spreading obscenity over the internet.

September 2009:

Kaifu Lee resigns, amid rumours that pressure from the Chinese government had become intolerable. John Liu is appointed to replace him.

October 2009:

A group of Chinese authors accuse Google of violating their copyright by reproducing their work on its Google Books service.

December 2009:

Rumours suggest Google had heavily reduced its staff in China.

January 2010:

Google announces it will stop self-censoring and that it may pull out of the country after a series of cyber attacks.

My blog is my own little lab to get information on how things work.  Curious I went to Google Analytics to see where China fit in GreenM3 traffic position.  Spot #30.

Data Center Executive Popularity

I was going over my site using Google Analytics looking at keywords.  As expected Green Data Center are the top three topics.

1

green data center

2

green data centers

3

green data center blog

What I also found interesting is who came up as data center executive names in the keywords.

And, the winner is?

Olivier Sanche, three times more than Mike Manos.

Christian Belady was just as popular as Mike.

And, next was Chris Malone.

Debra Chrapty showed up, but she is no longer a data center executive.

Now to be fare.  My Google Search result for Olivier Sanche shows up #2 whereas my Google Search result for Mike Manos shows up #5.  So, it is not a true popularity test, but an interesting thing as far as what executives bring traffic to www.greenm3.com

For comparison the “green data center” words bring in 5 times the amount of traffic.

Top 100 Countries Reading Green Data Center Blog

November is my 2 year anniversary running www.greenm3.com on the Green Data Center topic. I started out the site with the encouragement of an old friend Bob Visse who Google searched “green data center” and told me it is an ideal area to start a blog on.  After 2 years, the site has 950+ RSS Readers, and numerous top 10 Google search results.

The growth of the readership is amazingly linear.

There is a lot of I’ve learned over the past 2 years, and this blog is part of my system to document what is going in the industry.  It is now so ingrained in how I work that blogging is a natural part of the day, and explains why I am now up to this being my 988 post on the blog.  Hitting 1,000 posts by Nov 26, 2009 my exact 2 year anniversary is not going to be a problem.

And, the international reach is beyond my expectations. Below is the top 100 countries, rated in order of traffic hits to the blog over the last month.

Thanks for visiting my blog, and thanks to my new and old friends who continue to supply me with new ideas to write about.

Watching a person read my blog – Gartner employee

I use typepad for my blog, and go through the site statistics to see what people are reading checking out what google search words they use to find my entries.  This gives me an idea of what people are searching  for and who my readers are.  The following I am pretty sure is a Gartner employee.

This morning at 9:30p PST I wrote a blog post on Gartner’s recommendation for Pattern-based strategy.  At 2:45 and 2:48 pm I got the following hits.

image

The first was google search for “gartner advanced analytics.”  My one entry 5 hours earlier is result #6, beating out NetworkWorld.

image

The 2nd one is a google search for “reshaping the data center gartner”.  I have the #1 search result, behind google news, but beating gartner’s blog, CIO.com, and news.cnet.com.

image

I was visiting a friend who works at Google yesterday and we chatted briefly how well my blog works with Google search, but I swear I have no insider information.

All I know is keep on writing, and keep on looking at my results.

Thanks for reading my blog.
